Practical Move to Tiny Homes

When it comes to being a first time home buyer, bigger is not necessarily better.  With the economy in slow recovery, the cost of living increasing, and the average cost of home ownership on the raise.  It appears the next big trend in residential real estate may prove that smaller is better, more affordable, and practical.

If you haven’t figured it out yet…  It’s the tiny homes movement.  Affordable housing is a hot ticket these days as even current home owners are looking to downsize or resize in our current economy.

When you start looking at the national average price of a home across Canada, which is currently $391,085 (National Average Price per November), and then consider the median cost of a tiny home is around $20,000 for costs alone are staggering.  But tiny home living is not for everyone.

Here are some other benefits to consider then thinking about making the move or investment:

  • Less initial cost
  • Reduced energy consumption – Makes solar power much of an affordable or viable option.
  • Less water consumption and trash
  • Less cost for repairs – Consider the average cost of re-shingling a home is between $5 to 10K, verses a Tiny Home for used $100.00
  • Less land to purchase and upkeep – Or the ability to purchase a larger parcel of land with reduction of initial housing costs.
  • Less taxes – smaller footprint means reducing in taxes
