So, you live off the grid, inhabit a tiny home, or even live in the big city in a small apartment… This doesn’t mean you have to give up on growing a garden or having plants flourishing in that place you call home. Seeing as you have likely adjusted to living in limited space it likely means you have learn to be extremely crafty and innovative with some creative planning. However, you still feel you’re missing that one piece of the puzzle that will make your house a home. Plants, a garden, or both. Well, the following are a list of 5 suggestion for maximizing what little space you may have, while not overwhelming or cramping your alternative lifestyle. Remember space may be limited, but your creative space isn’t:
1. Utilize Vertical Space – Think Upward not Outward
Do a little shopping around in your planning, consider purchasing or growing plants that such as tomatoes, bamboo, peas, beans, lemongrass and other vine plants. Because these style of plants grow upwards they are ideal for areas where spaces are limited. Consider adding small trellis or other support for the plant to climb.
2. Think Herbal
Always wanted a natural source of herbs for your kitchen or kitchenette? Herbs are a perfect alternative to large plants and are well supported in small spaces because they generally grow in compact bunches, and are frequently trimmed for use in meal preparation. Rosemary, basil, thyme, cilanto, mint and other small herbs, or even strawberries, and vegetables like beans and cucumbers are perfect for a counter top planters in a sunny kitchen.
3. Time to Get Crafty and Creative
It’s time to break the traditional mold of the old flower pots, and dive into some creative recycling of goods around the house. Convert those items you would normally throw away, or dismiss as useless and maximize them within your available space. Perhaps, recycle those tin or aluminum cans of soup, maybe mason jars, plastic jam or mayonnaise jars, old rubber boots, or 2 liter pop bottles. One of my favorite is the re-purposed shoe organizers, but I’m a fan of hanging herbs and use of extra wall space.
